About Us

Chrisalis Home Academy is family child care that is registered, licensed thru the State of Maryland and participates in the Maryland EXCEL (Excellence Counts in Early Learning and School-age Child Care) Program.

As parents, we have learned and experienced that children learn, grow and develop in multiple  ways and at differents levels.  Therefore, as providers we seek to treat children as unique individuals; catering to their specific needs which is more easily accomplished in our small setting.  This allows us the benefits of being able to deliver individualized love and attention to each child; to gain healthy child development, positive self-esteem, problem-solving skills, socialization skills, and a true love of learning while in our care. We focus on the "whole child" by planning creative activities that promote intellectual, spiritual, emotional, physical growth and development.

We estalished a well-ordered, predictable and fun evnvironment, where daily routines are consistently done by all caregivers which promotes positive child development.  We believe open and honest communication is a key ingredient in creating a successful partnership with parents.

Thank you for your consideration of our program and allowing us the pleasure to be a vital part of your child growth.

Mark & Michelle

Mark & Michelle McDowelle decided to start a home childcare in November 2013.  We are former Foster Parents for the State of Washington, DC and Maryland.  It has always been our dream to open our own childcare and now we have made that dream come true.  We know and understand the struggles of parents with young children and we tried to incorporate things we thought would help make the load a little lighter.  We have raised two sons, Darvel and Rashad.  Darvel has completed college and now resides in Maryland with a BA in Management Information Systems.  He is also a substitute for Chrisalis Home Academy.  He will bring his expertise in technology to help your child explore in a safe manner.  Rashad, our youngest son joined the US Navy and is doing well.  We are very proud parents.

Mark McDowelle's educational background is in the field of Communications and he has met all the educational requirements set by the State of Maryland Office of Childcare.  He loves children and dogs "the innocent" and his hobbies include current events, movies, sports and caring for those who can't care for themselves.

Michelle McDowelle's (Tyler) educational background includes BA in Accounting, MS in Business, Religion/Pastoral Counseling and a MS in Divinity (Chaplain).  She has also met all the educational requirements set by the State of Maryland Office of Child Care.  She loves children and dogs as well and has made children a part of her ministry.  Michelle has worked with Purpose for Life, a non-profit organization that teaches life skills to children in juvenile lock up.  She served as a foster parent for three years and specialized in teaching life skills to those that were in her care.  Michelle also serves in the US Navy Reserves as a Master at Arms.

We welcome you to come out and get to know us.  This is a new program but by no means is it lacking experience.  We believe that the ingredients for a successful childcare is working with the parents, a safe environment, healthy balance activity, caring and nutrition coupled with faith.   We thank you in advance for allowing us to be a part of you and your child/children life.
